about

This song arose from our reminiscences over all the shows we'd played in Texas over the last few years, from the time I rolled into town with the Morphine Angel gang and played at Instant Karma in the Montrose (yeah I know some a ya'll was there!) to the time Asmo got our pants stolen from the dressing room in Corpus, to the time we had the wreck in West Texas Hill Country. There's a strange melancholic happy sadness as we look back over all of them. Too many other moments to fit in a song (like Vas blowing up the hard boiled egg that the Capitol Laquinta in Austin, or Joel 'diving' into the bed at Kali Yuga's house in Baton Rouge), but I think this song helps capture the mood for sure. Gives me that lost lonesome feel every time.

lyrics

FROM HELL TO TEXAS
by
Paul Fredric

Rolling down a dark highway. Looking for another gig to play
When you feel the summer heat and the world is at your feet
Take a drag on your cigarette, pop in a Bauhaus cassette
And the stars are shining bright deep in the heart of a Texas night

Rolled into Houston in a black Econoline
Looking for trouble and a wicked time. She said
Instant Karma is on the way, we got plenty of time to play
Just leave the boys outside. It’s been such a long hard ride

From Hell to Texas. Three cowboys on a lonesome night
From Hell to Texas. I fought that Devil to make it right

Rolled into Corpus, in a green Econoline
Down in the Bunker, with a Soldier who had the time
When the shit started coming down, no honor was to be found
When the bullets started to blaze, we shot our way out of that maze

One fateful night, deer in the headlight
I heard the sound of thunder. The old van started to tumble
Broken guitars across the highway, keyboards in the field they lay
Finally Gary started to cough, them boys dusted themselves off and rode

From Hell to Texas. Three cowboys on a lonesome night
From Hell to Texas. I fought that Devil to make it right
